I've posted all the qualities that everyone in this class thought were characteristics of an effective teacher on the right hand side of our blog....take a look at the list, thinking about the value of each characteristic. After you've reviewed the list carefully, please post your response to the following question.....
Congratulations! You've just landed the teaching position of your dreams. You begin packing your things to fly to the new school district and realize, due to the increased costs of gasoline, you can bring with you only three suitcases. Each suitcase can hold only ONE quality of an effective teacher...which three would you take with you and why?
Don't forget to also post a response to one of your peers. Happy Writing!

In my 3 suitcases I would want to bring the authoritative quality, the desire to teach my subject, and the ability to act on the needs of my students.
I think it is very important to show children who is in charge. If there is a question of authority, some children will feel like they can do whatever they want and the teacher won't have control over the class.
I also think it is very important for the teacher to be interested in the subject they are teaching. If they aren't interested, chances are they won't do very well at encouraging the students to be interested and do well in the subject.
Acting on the students needs is very important as well. Not all students learn the same way and some students may need the teacher to explain something differently or do something a different way in order for them to comprehend whatever they are being taught.
With these 3 qualities I think I could do well at my new teaching position.
If I could only take three suitcases, each containing a quality of effective teaching, these are the three I would choose:
1. Love. I think that if a teacher loves their students (every single one), the students will love the teacher and love learning. If the students know that the teacher truly loves them and truly wants the to succeed, the learning environment will be much more positive. So it is vital that a teacher loves his/her students.
2. An authoritative nature. It is extremely important that students have fun in class, and it is also important that students have strong relationships with their teachers. But, if a teacher cannot control the classroom, the students will never learn the necessary material. So it is necessary for a teacher to be authoritative.
3. Patience. Students learn and grow at different rates. Teachers cannot expect everyone to be at the same level of understanding and knowledge. Therefore, the teacher must have patience in dealing with both learning styles and the children's personalities.
Consequently, if I could only take three qualities of an effective teacher, they would be love, an authoritative nature, and patience.
In my three suitcases I would bring with me to the teaching position of my dreams would be, patience, understanding, and accuracy. I picked these three qualities because I think each one has a unique roll in being an effective teacher. I picked patience because, not all students will learn at the same rate. It might take awhile for certain kids to comprehend new ideas. I picked understanding because not all children were raised the same way, and have the same obstacles that other children have. Last, I picked accuracy because it's not enough to be an understanding patient teacher. It means nothing if the information you are giving is not accurate
I agree with Maggie Heinemann with her three choices. I really liked the authoritative nature characteristic. I think it is very important that you do have control of your classroom.
In my suitcases i would bring high expectation, good communication skills, and caring.
I think that having high expectation for student success is important bacause if the student know what is expected of them it give them a better change in reaching that goal of being a successful student. I also show that me as a teacher want her students to be successful.
Being a caring teacher is also important quality to be because from my experience with having caring teacher that become easy to talk to and it shows that student even though Im the teacher I still care about them as my students and that if they have a problem they can come to me.
My last suitcase has good ommunication skills becasue if u cant communicat with your student then there is no way that while teaching you would beable to reach out to the student besauce you not no how to communicate with them.
I also agree with the ideas that Maggie Heinemann has with love, authoritative and patience. Because you remember the teachers that truly love their studenrs and that even though the love their student they still hold a authoritative attitutide and they have patience because a teacher with out patience is not an effective teacher.
I agreed with Andrea Mitchell when she said that it is important to set high expectations for your students. If a teacher does not set a high standard for the class, the class will not reach a high standard. However, if a teacher expects a lot from his/her class, then the class will work harder to meet that expectation. So I definitely agree with Andrea; teachers need to set high standards.
Only three..that is a really hard decision. I would have to take the energetic quality, the love your students quality and the patience quality. Some of my very best and favorite teachers were those who had the qualities I listed above. Any teacher I had that was energetic was really able to engage the class and get them excited about learning. One of my teachers literally danced aroud the room, but she kept us on our toes. If you don't love your students you will never reach them. There has to be at least one quality you can find to love about each one of your students. It is important that they know you are them for them even when it does't come to your subject matter. For example, if they have family problems. It is also important to have patience with your students because not everyone learns at the same level or pace and it is easy for them to notice when you are getting annoyed or aggravated with them for not understanding. I think other qualities are important too, but they can be interrelated. For instance, if you are energetic and engage the class and you show them love and patience then with that they will respect you and you will be the one in charge with the final say in the classroom.
I agree with Amy Huskey and Maggie Heinemann's choices. I think that they choice really important qualities as well and were able to explain why they chose those qualities. As Amy said acting on students needs is important. As the teacher you need to find a way to cater to each individual student.
In each of my suitcase would be respect, meeting the students needs, and passionate.
In the first suitcase I would have respect. You want all you students to respect you as you respect them. In this cateorgory falls model how your students want to be. You dont want any of your students acting out in a different mannor. So the teacher as got to be that perfect role model for each of her students.
In my second suitcase would be meeting all your students needs. All of your students are very different and learn differnt. One student could very intelligent an another could be kind of slow in different areas you want to help the slower one a little bit more or even slow the material for the whole class to help and understand what you are teaching them.
My thrid suitcase would be passionate. You have to be passionate about your job. If you come into class one day throw your stuff and is just in the upset mood your students are not going to be very happy or not even want to be in that class. You have to act atleast even if your havin a bad day.You have to be passsionate.
In my 3 suitcases i would want to bring patience, respect and the knowledge of my subject.
I think that it's important to have patience. Alot of students learn things at differnet rates. Some children take longer then others so you have to be patient and help them learn it. I think having respect is also impotant when teaching. You want students to respect you so you have to respect them too. Treat others the way you want to be treated. The last quality that is important is knowing your subject. Teachers have to be able to teach the right matieral. If you are giving out the wrong information then your students aren't learning anything. You would be teaching for nothing because the information is wrong.
I agree with Amy in her three choices. I like the authoritative quality. I think that it is important that a teacher have control of their students. If you don't then your students will do what they want and it will get out of control.
I would choose loves students, patience, and meets the students' needs. I think that the studenmts should alway be your top priority, therefore caring for them, listening to them, and working with them is the most effective way to help them.
Rachel Ramski is right and so are the others she mentioned. Like I said eralier, the students MUST be your TOP priority. The students will tell us how good a job we are doing and how much we are helping them through how they perform in class.
In my three suitcases, I wouls bring patience, enthusiasm, and the quality of being easy to talk to. Patience is very important because every student learns at a different rate and in order for everyone to understand, the teacher needs to have patience. Enthusiasm is also another important quality and helps keep students attention in class. If the teacher is enthusiastic, it makes it easier for students to do the same and have a desire to be in class. I think one of the most important qualities for a teacher to have is being friendly and easy to talk to. It is important to create a classroom environment where students feel compfortable in; asking questions, asking for help, and even making mistakes.
I agree with eva and what she said about the quality of respect. Respect is an important quality for teachers to have, as well as recieve. Teacher's most respect each and every one of their students. And students most be taught to respect the teacher as well.
In my three suitcases i would have:
Attention keeping- if the class isn't paying attention what good are you doing. You might as well be speaking a diffrent language.
Acts on students needs- you cant teach nessesarialy how you would want something to be taught to you you have to asses your students needs and go from there shaping your curriculum around them.
Passionate- you have to love what your teaching and love teaching in gereral so that your students know that you want to be there and to maybe get them to get into what your saying and enjoy the subject as well.
I agree with tim about the students always coming first but i also think amy h. has a point about showing authority. you cant help your students if they are too busy walking all over you so i think thats important also.
The first suitcase would have good communication skills because so many issues that arise in the classroom can be solved by effective communication. The second suitcase would contain my live for my subject matter as I cannot get my students excited about learining if I'm not excited to teach. The third suitcase would have an authoritative nature because kids order to be able to learn. This doesn't necessarily mean it has to be boring, even hand on and moving activities can be orderly.
I don't think it can possibly narrowed down to only 3 great qualities. Granted there will probably only be 3 areas any single teacher will be great at, I think that it takes some of everything to be a truly effective teacher. That being said, my choice is to drive across country and pack everything.
The three things I would bring in my suitcases would be passionate, caring, and respect.
First I would bring passionate because you need to be passionate about the subject your teaching because you will not enjoy teaching everyday if your not passionate about it.The students will see that you don't enjoy being there and they probably would not also.
Second suitcase would have caring, because you need to be able to care about all of your students so that they can see your there to help them.
Finally my third suitcase would be respect, because I will respect all my students and then maybe they will respect me just as much.
I agree with Andrea Mitchell because I think you should have high expectations for the students because you want them to always try their hardest and never give up.
In my three suitcases I would bring meeting needs of all students, keeping attention and knowledge of material. I believe these three are the most important because all children are not on the same level and children learn different ways so you have to be prepared to answer questions in different ways to meet the needs of all children. It is also important to keep their attention because they will not learn anything if they are bored and not paying attention. It is also very imprtant to have a deep knowledge of the material you are teaching because if you seem unsure the kids will not listen but if you are confident and can answer their questions then they will respect you and listen to you and learn from you.
I think alyssa ennis has good ideas. I agree that respect is very important because without respect you will have to control of the class. Knowledge of your subject is also something I agree with and of course patience. You will never be an effective teacher without patience.
In my three suitcases i would bring acts on needs of all students, passionate, and patience. I think that if a teacher meets and acts on the needs of all the students, they are teaching each student to their exact level of sill and understanding. With this comes patience to work with those who are falling behind and/or not quite as advanced as the rest of the class. Also, a teacher needs the patience to control the class. Finally, a teacher needs to be passionate both about what shes teaching and who she is teaching. When a teacher is passionate and cares about each student the care about their succes. If they have a passion for their job and the material being tought, they will come to work with many of the other qualities such and enthusiasm and accuracy.
I agree with Dan Brewer that an effective teacher has only three qualities. A teacher must have many qualities that builds up their personality and methods which both can make or break an effective teacher.
The three I think I would bring whould be Caring, Organized, and Enthusiastic.
I chose caring because I feel that if a teacher dose not care for each and every one of their children then the will never stive to make each child better at whatever it is they are working on.
The second one i choose was organized. The reason i choose this one was because I feel that if your organized no matter what it is your doing you can work more efficantly. This will in turn free up more time for a teacher to work more one on one with there kids.
And lastly Enthusiastic. I feel this more then anything is so important because how do you expect your kids to excited about learning something if your not excited about teaching it.
In my three cases i would have passion, organization, love for the students, and meeting the needs of my students. A passion for teaching is very important and your students will pick up on if you really want your job. It also makes the students really excited to be in a class when the teacher has a passion to be there. We have all had the teacher who has lost a paper or never stays on task. That is something that gets old and annoying after a while. Its definatly something that is good to have so you stay on task and students know what to expect.A LOve for students make the students feel comfortable in their environment. When students are comfortable they will respond more and actually want to come to class.
I actually agree with everyones blogs. Everyone has their own ideas and from what i have read they all sound like they would make great teachers all in their own ways.
I like what Kelly Kroeger said about being passionate about what you are teaching. Kids see that and will not be very enthusiastic about learning from a teacher who doesn't enjoy their job.
I think that Love is also a very impostarnt quality to have as a teacher. As Maggie said you must have a true desire for everyone in your class to succeed in order to teach them effectivly. If you could care less whether they do well or not chances are that student will not try.
In my three suitcases I would bring attention keeping, personal relationships, and not only meeting the students' needs but also acting on the students' needs. These three qualities are very important to me when it comes to my teachers. When it comes to keeping the students' attention that is very important so that they don't get bored and just stop listening to what is being taught. Personal relationships are important to me as well. There will different classes of kids in each class from all different types of families. So it is important to me that I know each of my kids and am on a personal level with each and every single one of them. My last suitcase was not only meeting the students' needs but also acting upon their needs. So you want to meet in the middle of where all the students learning abilities are but also act upon the students needs.
I agree with destiny on how she said she agreed with everyones. That is very true. Everyone has their own idea of an effective teacher. Which your own idea doesnt always work out for the best. But thats when you look into other methods of teaching and improve on whatever it is thats not working.
The three things qualities I would bring with me on my way to my dream teaching job is relating to students, patience, and being a confident speaker.
My dream is to be a teacher of children in third world countries. Some kids in the world are in need of a great deal of help, and expecially kids in poverty. I feel like I can make a difference in children's lives by doing this. Giving them hope is so important to me. I feel like these three qualities are the most important to what I want to do with my life.
I agree with Eva White and her three most important qualities. It is important to meet the students needs, and also to be very passionate about what you are teaching your audience. To respect someone is one of the most important thing among any relationship with a human being, specifically teaching.
in my 3 suitcases i would bring
1. interest of the subject- One of the first choices of teaching is that of your subject. The way i veiw it is that with anything you do you need the proper knolwege of your subject to make it easy for others to learn from you.
2.Patience - during high school i was not a fast learner so i know
from first hand experience that students learn at veriable paces and not every one will learn at the same speed. patience can also help in the classroom with planning assignments.
3. Enthusiastic- As a teacher you have to be able to engage your students so they pay atention to your subject.
i agree with Maggie Heiemann its true you have to love your students and care about them, because if you dont and they fall behind its your responisibility to get them caught up and if you dont have the love to do that you will be one of those teachers we all had that doesnt care about the class and you learn nothing
in my 3 suitcases i would want to bring the passionate, acts on students needs, and knowledgeable. i picked these because if a teacher is passionate about what she does the kid will see that she wants to be there helping and teaching the kids. Also if the teacher cares about the student needs it will promote a good relationship between the teacher and the student and the student will have more self esteem to learn. Finally, i think in order for the teacher to do her job effectively she has to be knowledgeable about what she is teaching so the kids can recieve the best education possible.
In my suitcases I would bring my fun loving spirit, my attentiveness, and my ability to make things interesting.
Its very important to make the subject that you are teaching interesting because if you don't, then you will loose your students.
It's also important to make sure that you have a fun loving spirit because if you just stand in front of the class and act like a complete stiff, then your class will become bored of you and will be afraid to talk to you.
Being attentive is also a major part of being a teacher because you need to be attentive to the kids that are falling behind everyone else. If you dont pay attention to your students, then they wont learn. You also need to pay attention to your students different learning styles. Maybe mix up you teaching styles a little bit to find out how your class will learn more.
I belive I would take the same traits that amy huskey took. She basically stole my ideas.
I belive a teacher must also be energetic, charismatic, and also be able to forma bond with his or her students. The teacher must always have control of the classroom but also make the experience fun and entertaining. If the students did not learn anything from the teacher, then that teacher was not doing their job. Every student has their own way of learning and I belive it is up to the teacher to find the correct way to teach on an individual and group basis.
In my suitcase, I would bring entertainment, respect/authority and needs. Entertainment to obviously keep my students entertained, respect because if you bring it, they'll give it and needs because each student is different and needs different things!
if i had to pick 3 things to bring to the class room to use while trying to teach the first would be authority. if you show no authority then all the kids will do is mess around and not worry about learning. next i would be caring. you have to show compassion to your students or sometimes be hard, you just have to do what is best for them. last i would have the skill to teach the subject because of course it would be hard to be a good teacher if you didnt know the subject.
in a way i agree with everybody. but this is one of those things that you need to decide for yourself and take in intrest that how you teach could and probably will effect your students lives.
I would pack my 3 suit cases with good communication skills, attention keeping, love your students.
I believe being able to talk to your students is key. Teaching is all about communicating a lesson and how well the student understandes the lesson depends on well the teacher communicates it.
A teacher should always keep her lessons interesting and never be monotone. A well prepared teacher can ingage the students at all times.
Loveing your students is key. A student needs to now that he can talk to his teacher at anytime and about anything.
I agree with kristin about packing passionate. A teacher should care about having a good relationship with her students in and out of the classroom.
I would bring respetc for sure. In my expierence when a teacher shows me respect then i am much more inclined to give it back. I would also bring excitement because when the teacher is excited then the student get excited and everyone has moer fun learning in the classroom. The final thing i would bring is knowledge of the subject. You obviously cant teach if you dont know what your talking about.
In the first suitcase i will bring is the ability to find common ground with my students...how can you teach kids if can't be on their level and understand them?
In the second suitcase i will bring knowledge of current events in the world...if you don't know whats going on how can you be prepared for questions? Kids ask a lot of questions.
In my last suitcase i would put the ability of engagement. I hope that i will never lose a child's intrest....or put anyone to sleep in my classes. :)
