Question of the week
We've really covered alot of material this past week...readings from the text book, the assessment article, and the youtube videos. You've participated in individual activities as well as group work. Let's think practical for a minute or two, what is your current state? How are you assimilating the information you have received up to this point? What mental activities have you been using to work through this material? You can respond to your thoughts about our in-class discussions, readings, activities, and/or youtube videos. Just a reminder to not only post your comment, but reply to one of your peers as well!

After seeing the youtubes and being in class I have definatly learned alot more about what I am getting myself in to. I have a better defintion of effective teaching snd im getting "pumped" for teaching! I am very excited yet, obvioulsy scared at the same time. I am proud to be someone who will be helping out the future kids of america and I'm hoping I will be able to make a diffrence.
I have to say the two videos that just threw statistics at me were very boring and didn't do much for me. I don't care about the statistics about how some teaching methods used today are archaic and that English as the nation's primary language is shrinking. Those are things I knew already, so they just didn't do anything for me. However, the Taylor Mali poem video was phenomenal. I have to say it was one of the most inspirational videos I've seen in my years at this university going through the classes. I sent it to some of my peers that aren't in this class and had them watch it. I even showed it to a co-worker that is student teaching. I found his gritty, hard-nosed way of putting everything a teacher does to be a very awesome way of getting across a very great truth, plus knocking on lawyers for being jerks is always something of humor.
I have absolutely loved our class so far. Coming to Lindenwood, I wasn't exactly sure if I wanted to go into Education. But after being in the class, I am so much more excited about teaching as a profession. I love the relaxed environment of the class, and I have thoroughly enjoyed the variety of learning methods we use (like group work, youtube videos, etc.). I really appreciate the time and thought put into each lesson; I feel like I learn more because I am not being lectured at. Also, class so far has made me want to learn how to be a really effective teacher. So I am excited about this semester and everything I will get to learn and experience through this class.
In addition, I want to kind of disagree with dan brewer. I loved the youtube videos with the stats. I found them extremely interesting, and they made me more motivated to learn how to be a better teacher. So I think that the youtube vidoes with the statistics were just as effective.
After everything that we have done in class I would have to say that the first youtube video we watched was what has effected me the most. I think that he is the definition of effective teaching. He talked about motivating his students and impacting his students and that is great. Both of my parents are teachers and as I take more of these education classes I realize that they were also teachers like that and I hope to be as successful as they were.
I agree with dan brewer. That first video was very inspirational but the others really did not do much for me. You can really learn alot about teaching from the first video.
Right now, Im just in awe of the teaching style im learning by! All the things that you (mrs. bishop) are as a teacher cant be found in the book. Im learning more just by watching you. The videos, the way you explain yourself-so i dont feel out of the loop-make me love the class even more! I want to be the kind of teacher that you are!
i have wanted to be a teacher for a while, but after seeing those vidoes on youtube i've looked at teaching a totally different way. I didn't want to leave high school, I loved in there, but now when I go back I hope I will be teaching and making a difference.
i agree dan brewer about the youtube videos and how every teacher has their own way to teach and get across to students and we just need to find our own method that works for us.
I like the class so far. It is a fun and laied back class. I knew i have always wanted to be a teacher and the youtube videos made me really think more about it. I think that they were very interesting and effective. They made me see how to be a more effective teacher. I also liked seeing all the statistics.
I agree with Kayla. I think that the videos definatly made me learn alot more about what I am going to be doing in the future. They also give me a better idea on effective teaching.
The reading from the text are honestly very boreing i can't get into it because the author just keeps giving us examples of other teachers and it just kind of blah for me. And I have to agree with Dan about the Taylor video it made me be feel more secure in my career choice, it made me want to do what he does. I like our class activities and everything, it's just that book that kills me.
I completely agree with Maggie H...This has been one of the best ed classes that I have ever taken. It is interactive and open for discussion. All of my other ed classes, not at Lindenwood, but at another university were so boring...All the professor did were lecture and they didn't really want the students involvement...Watching the videos has really been food for thought...and I also think that the way you teach gives us something to strive for...You come into class everyday energetic and in a good mood. That is how I want to appear in front of my students everyday even if I don't really feel so happy or energetic on occasion.
The youtube videos on statistics have really made me think a lot. I am so used to the "old school" ways of teaching. My teachers used over head projectors and a white board and now I am going to have to use the internet and powerpoint ect. to teach. It is sort of weird to me, because I actually prefer the "old school" ways of teaching. Not that it necessarily has to be by the book, but I am not a huge fan of learning with technology. This is something I have been thinking about since last class and I am really going to have to try my best to implement technology in my classroom. Especially since my students will most likely want me to, since that is what they have become accustomed to.
I love this class so far. I believe teaching is something you do selflessly out of love for the students. Watching the youtube videos really puts teaching into perspective. It hits my in the heart and I can't wait to learn more to make myself a better teacher.
This class just makes me realize why I have always wanted to become a teacher. Most people question my decision to become a teacher because the amount of pay but it is not about the money, it is about helping the students learn. The you tube videos just made me want to learn more about what it is to be a great teacher.
I would have to say I disagree with dan brewer, I did not think that the videos were boring at all and I learned a lot from them.
I thought the videos were interesting but somewhat irrelevant except the freedom writers one. It was very moving (I have not seen Freedom Writers yet)and made me hope I can either learn or acquire the skils that teacher had to have that much impact on her students.
I liked working in the groups because we got to meet a few new people, but the material we discussed seemed obvious to anyone who has interest in teaching
i agree with taylor lewis. Mrs. Bishop's teaching style has been very effective on me. She makes class very interesting with her various teaching methods and energy.
I agree with Kayla. None of us quite knew what we'd be getting into, but the youtube videos have helped.
The material is hitting kind of fast, but it's good because as teachers we'd need to be able to deal with information and situations quickly in order to keep the "flow" of the classroom going. The statistics were kinda boring, but they are needed to give us a rough vision of the state of the "teaching world". This class hasn't been quite what I'd expected, so I'm a bit at odds with some of the concepts. Yet I've always said, "Expect the unexpected!"
The past couple weeks I have learned so much and all of it has inspired me to be a teacher even more. The videos we've watched really opened my eyes up even more into technology and education in the 21st century. I can't wait to start observing my classes. I'm ready to experince new things. I ready to get the show on the road and start helping out the future students and having them make a difference.
After seein the first video we watch it had the most impact on me. It made me feel like teacher really make a difference no matter what other people tend to think. It also make me proud that one day I will be a teacher and will be making a difference.
I agree with Dan becuae the other two videos did not touch me that much but it did a little. But the first video really left me with an idea of what effective teachers do.
What Kelly Kroeger said was right on. A great number of people also question my desire to be a teacher, including my parents. When I see things that are inspirational, it gives me more confidence to continue on the path to being a teacher.
I have really enjoyed this class so far and like the ways in which we are going about learning the material. Although the readings are boring and sometimes a pain, I think they provide a lot of important ideas that help our in-class discussions. I also enjoyed the group activity we did in class. I liked how the readings were split up and then we shared with out groups what we had learned about. This was nice because we learned all of the material and wern't overloaded with pages to read.
I agree with Kayla in thinking that the youtube videos definetly make me proud to be soeone who will be helping out future kids in America. The statistics were very interesting and actually somewhat shocking.
The youtube videos really got me thinking about different ways to get through to kids. Different ways to teach them the things they need to learn. Traditionally kids have paper, pencils, worksheets, and other similar tools to learn with in the classroom. The truth is our nation is a technological nation. Kids are surrounded by electronics, and learn how to used them quickly. In order to stay up with the world, it is necessary to use technology as much as possible to help kids learn.
When i first came to Lindenwood, I was set on being a finance major and becoming a financial advisor. At the start of classes this semester, I was realizing that I wasn't enjoying the classes I was in, and I always though being a teacher would be so much fun. The only thing holding me back, was the salary. I loved how you showed me that teachers have a potetial of making very good money, plus the retirement plan can't be beat! I find myself excited to go to your class, because I know we won't just be reading from the book and doing power points, but we will actually get involved with the information we're supposed to be learning. I thought both youtube videos were very good. I liked the video with all the statistics. I really opened my mind to the things that we education majors need to be aware of. We need to try and make learning fun, and not something that you dread doing.
Lyndsey Warren
I agree with Maggie. I have absolutely loved our class so far! I agree that I am learning more because it's a relaxed environment also!
Lyndsey Warren
I agree with maggie about this class. I also was not 100% sure about teaching before this class and I honestly cant say that I am 100% sure yet. But this class has made me ALOT more excited about teaching and has opened my eyes to more fun and exciting ways to teach.
I can honestly say that the Youtube videos and the in-class excercises have shed a light on what teaching is really about. I know we've just scratched the surface but I'm eager to learn more. I want to get in a classroom and start observing because I think the best way to prep for something is get jump in the deep end. Plus if I can observe my high school history teacher, I think the learning experience would be even greater. He was one of those teachers that could illistrate a story with his words. After what we've learned so far I an honestly say that I'm going into the right profession for the right reasons.
I have been asked many times why I wanted to be a teacher. Some of my friends laughed and some were surprised. It became hard when my parents started questioning my decision. Despite all the ups and downs to teaching I cannot wait to get to work. The videos were great.
I def agree with victoria. the text to me is a little bit boring and hard to read. I enjoyed the youtube and other forms of learning over just textbook reading.
After everything we have done so far and learned i feel like i have learned so much and have been incorporating the things i have learned whenever i teach kids at my job. I haven't taken many education courses so far but by taking this class i feel that my knowledge has greatly increased. i agree a lot with kayla's post bc that is exactly how i feel. Im very excited that this is what i want to do with my life.
I have always known that I wanted to teach, but like Lyndsey Warren, the salary was always a drawback. I am single with three kids, so pay is an issue for me. I have tried may things, and ended up working for a law firm. And while the money was there I hated every minute of it. That experience along with what I have learned of teaching here, have helped me to come to the realization that some things are more important than money.

As the class goes on i find that teaching is what i am realy ment to do. i used to wonder about how i was going to make money or afford things, but what ive realised is that i can be poor and happy or i could be middle class and hate my job. Also the fact that i enfluence kids to find their dreams and make goals for themselves makes me happy.
I definetly have to agree with Dan Brewer. the youtube posts were boring. The way i viewed it though was that life is a big statistic and to view something you love to do/ want to do will slowly degrade your opinion of it.
I think the youtube videos were very cool. It is nice to see people so passionate about the teaching profession. To me these are people who really have the right idea, and are the type of people we need in schools.
I agree with maggie it is alot better to learn in a class in the way we are rather then being lectured all class long.
The information that has been presented to us thus far has been fairly easy to grasp and take in. It really does us no good if we know these important ideas, but do not apply it to what we are doing. Patience, honesty, and compassion should be shown everyday inside and outside of the office or the classroom. It is important to practice what we are learning and will continue to learn.
I agree with ethan, about how much the videos can affect one's mindset. Instead of looking at the figures that teachers make, the teacher focuses on the lives that he can change. And that to him is absolutely priceless.
I have learned much in this class and with everything that we have done. I am excited most of all to begin my observations and see what it is like to just watch. I have never gotten the oppurtunity to just watch. i think that that will determine how i rally feel about teaching. I dont think that my mind is going to change about me wanting to teach though.
After going to this class i have decided concretely that i want to be a teacher...before i wasn't entirely sure, and now i am reminded of the impactthat i have the opportunity to make on the future.
